Clinical Director/Supervisory Physician (Clinical)

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking an exceptional and motivated leader to serve as the Clinical Director/Supervisory Physician (Clinical) within the Clinical Investigation Branch (CIB) in the Division of Intramural Research (DIR). The NCCIH DIR conducts basic, translational, and clinical research to improve our understanding of neural mechanisms of pain processing and nonpharmacologic modulation of pain. The Clinical Director/Supervisory Physician (Clinical) will have a wide range of administrative and clinical responsibilities relating to the oversight of the clinical intramural research program for admitting patients, providing medical oversight, and prescribing medications. The Clinical Director/Supervisory Physician will oversee the Trans-Institute Pain Research Program at the NIH Clinical Center and may direct a small research program of their own. He/she will also oversee scientific review and data and safety monitoring for the NCCIH DIR to ensure that the highest standards of clinical research are met, and that medical staff in the DIR are supported in this endeavor with adequate clinical research support systems. The Clinical Director/Supervisory Physician will be responsible for the overall coordination of services for the clinical staff and patients. Duties will also include development of mechanistic clinical research concepts and protocols, oversight and coordination of active trials, data analysis and evaluation, and publication of results. 

The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen and have an M.D. or D.O. degree or equivalent, board certification in a pain-related clinical discipline, demonstrated leadership ability, and relevant training in pain management. Candidates must have specialized expertise in the following areas:

  • Pain-related research 
  • The regulatory aspects of clinical research, including patient safety monitoring, and human research protections
  • Scientific communication, including analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of scientific and clinical data, preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presentation of research findings to internal and external audiences.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. The salary range for a Clinical Director/Supervisory Physician is $137,849 up to $275,000. A full civil service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available.
