Alyssa Cotler, M.P.H.
Director, Office of Communications and Public Liaison
Alyssa Cotler is the Director of the Office of Communications and Public Liaison (OCPL) at NCCIH. Ms. Cotler provides strategic communications advice to NCCIH's Director and is liaison on communications with the NIH and the Department of Health and Human Services. As Director of OCPL, she oversees communications planning activities, the development of information and education materials for the public and health care practitioners, content management of the NCCIH website, liaison activities with the media, implementation of health education and outreach initiatives, and operation of NCCIH's Information Clearinghouse.
Since joining NCCIH in 2002, Ms. Cotler has focused on communications programming and evaluation and managed many of the Center's communications and outreach initiatives. Among those, she developed NCCIH's Time to Talk educational initiative, which aims to encourage a dialogue between patients and health care providers about CAM use. She also led efforts to gather public and professional input for the Center's third strategic plan.
Prior to joining NCCIH, Ms. Cotler was a Vice President at Matthews Media Group, a health communications consulting firm, where she managed a wide range of communications efforts for the National Cancer Institute. In addition, she has experience in public policy and advocacy, having worked on Capitol Hill and a D.C.-based lobbyist for higher education and advanced technology. She later joined the National Breast Cancer Coalition, where she was responsible for launching the Coalition's clinical trials project.
Ms. Cotler earned a bachelor's degree in English and Government and Politics and a master's in public health from the University of Maryland at College Park. She has won several awards for her communications work, including the NCCIH Director's Merit Award and NIH Plain Language Awards.
