As part of an initiative to strengthen and build an optimal clinical trials enterprise, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a notice in fall 2016, Policy on Funding Opportunity Announcements for Clinical Trials (NOT-OD-16-147), that outlines NIH-wide changes in the way it will accept clinical trial applications. Specifically, NIH will require that all applications involving one or more clinical trials be submitted through a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) specifically designed to accept clinical trials. Although the target effective date of this policy is January 25, 2018 (NOT-OD-17-043), some NIH Institutes and Centers have already published clinical trials-specific FOAs. NCCIH, likewise, is moving forward with plans to develop Center-specific clinical trials initiatives to improve the submission and review of clinical trial applications.

The NIH recognizes that there is great breadth and diversity in the types of and topics for clinical trials; Institutes and Centers will retain the flexibility to determine how best to design FOAs for clinical trials for their communities. We feel that publishing NCCIH-specific FOAs for clinical trials will improve the ability of NCCIH staff to assist researchers develop and implement their studies.

Our Center will reach out to the complementary and integrative health research community as these initiatives are published. To receive our information, we encourage you to subscribe to NCCIH Update.
