Mark Pitcher, M.Sc., Ph.D.

Visiting Fellow

Division of Intramural Research
National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH)
Building 35, Room 1C10102
Bethesda, MD 20892

Dr. Mark Pitcher, M.Sc., Ph.D., will conduct neuroscience research in relation to spinal pain mechanisms, specifically on the analgesic effects of exercise using anatomical/quantitative measures (i.e., receptor expression levels and locations) and functional measures (i.e., behavioral testing, in vivo electrophysiological recording from single neurons, immediate early gene labeling).

Previously, Dr. Pitcher was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain at McGill University, where he performed neuroscience research on spinal mechanisms of pain. Specifically, he studied the role of the NKCC1 co-transporter in secondary (referred) pain as well as how PKMzeta maintains persistent pain in the spinal cord.
