Symptoms Matter—Leading Causes of Disability

Symptoms and other conditions that result from disease or injury exact a huge toll globally. In the United States, pain, depression, and anxiety are among the most common causes of years lived with disability (YLD).

Years Lived With Disability (YLD) in 2013 in the United States, by Cause and Age The graph shows the percent of years lived in less than ideal health for the following four conditions and 14 age groups:  Chronic respiratory diseases: 15-19: 6.66%; 20-24: 4.65%; 25-29: 4.64%; 30-34: 5.21%; 35-39: 5.82%; 40-44: 6.44%; 45-49: 7.04%; 50-54: 7.52%; 55-59: 7.69%; 60-64: 7.78%; 65-69: 7.75%; 70-74, 7.37%; 75-79, 7.05%; 80+, 6.40%. Diabetes, urogenital, blood, endocrine: 15-19: 3.51%; 20-24: 4.38%; 25-29: 5.69%; 30-34: 6.70%; 35-39: 7.42%; 40-44: 8.94%; 45-49: 9.83%; 50-54: 9.33%; 55-59: 10.41%; 60-64: 11.56%; 65-69: 12.13% 70-74, 11.83%; 75-79, 10.42%; 80+, 7.19%. † Musculoskeletal disorders include low-back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and other musculoskeletal.
