Parkinson’s disease is a movement disorder that occurs when nerve cells in the brain that make the chemical dopamine stop working normally. The primary symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are tremor, or trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face; rigidity, or stiffness of the limbs and trunk; bradykinesia, or slowness of movement; and postural instability, or impaired balance and coordination. As these symptoms become more pronounced, people may have difficulty walking, talking, or completing other simple tasks. There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but medications and a surgical procedure called deep brain stimulation may help control symptoms for a limited period.
