The Harvard Medical School Research Fellowship in Integrative Medicine is a three year joint program of Harvard Medical School-affiliated teaching hospitals led by research faculty in the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Harvard Medical School. The primary goal of the program is to prepare individuals for successful careers as independent investigators in IM. The program accepts postdoctoral candidates including physicians, anthropologists, health behaviorists, sociologists, psychologists and integrative medicine (IM) providers with doctoral degrees who are interested in research training towards academic careers. Areas of special interest include 1) mind-body therapies, and 2) placebo studies. Other areas of focus and faculty expertise include chronic disease management, obesity and cardiopulmonary health, musculoskeletal health, patient-provider relationship, neurocognition, and healthy aging.

All fellows participate in the Program in Clinical Effectiveness at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, an intensive summer core curriculum in epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical and health services research, and decision sciences. Many fellows continue their studies and pursue a Masters of Public Health degree. Throughout 3 years, fellows participate in formal and informal coursework, ongoing seminars and lectures, clinical work, extracurricular training, and mentored original research- the cornerstone of the program. Fellows are expected to obtain an advanced understanding of the basic disciplines of scientific research and apply these to the field of IM. The program also provides exposure to the various disciplines within IM and fellows develop a working knowledge of the general scope of the field within biomedicine. In addition, the program allows fellows to cultivate teaching skills and clinical IM skills according to the individual fellow’s background, training, and interests.
