Which Data Sharing Policies Apply to My Research?
NIH has many data sharing policies for the different types of research it funds. The NIH data sharing policies include the following:
- Genomic Data Sharing Policy
- 2003 Data Sharing Policy
- Data Management and Sharing Policy (in effect January 25, 2023)
- Model Organism Sharing Policy
- Research Tools Policy
- Clinical Trial Information Dissemination Policy
- Public Access Policy
To determine which policy or policies apply to your research, you need to know what type of research outputs your project will produce (i.e., is data being generated?), when your application is due, what type of research is being conducted (basic, clinical, translational), if model organisms or research tools are being created, etc.
If your research generates scientific data and you submitted a grant application, contract proposal, intramural research project, or funding agreement on or after January 25, 2023, the new NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy will apply.
The NIH website has an interactive tool that we encourage applicants to explore when determining which DMS policy applies to their research:
