On Friday, June 7, the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Integrative Health (NACCIH) will meet on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus. We welcome NCCIH grantees, potential applicants, and our other stakeholders to attend the Open Session to hear updates on the Center’s activities, policies, and funding priorities. NCCIH will livestream the session on NIH Videocast from 10 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. ET, where it will also be archived.

Our agenda includes a symposium on NIH’s High-Risk, High-Reward Research program and its application to NCCIH. A program of the NIH Common Fund, High-Risk, High-Reward grants support exceptionally creative scientists pursuing highly innovative research with the potential to transform biomedical or behavioral science. These grants are made as NIH Director’s Awards in four categories: Pioneer Awards, New Innovator Awards, Transformative Research Awards, and Early Independence Awards. Our speakers will be:

  • Emmeline Edwards, Ph.D., Director, Division of Extramural Research (DER), NCCIH
  • James Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., Director, Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives, Office of the Director, NIH
  • Susan Weiss, Ph.D., Director, Division of Extramural Research, National Institute on Drug Abuse
  • Peter Strick, Ph.D., Scientific Director, University of Pittsburgh Brain Institute, and Thomas Detre, Chair and Distinguished Professor, Department of Neurobiology, University of Pittsburgh
  • Alia Crum, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Stanford University.

The agenda also includes:

  • A report from NCCIH Director Helene M. Langevin, M.D.
  • The annual report of the Director of the NCCIH Division of Intramural Research, Catherine Bushnell, Ph.D.
  • Presentations of three research concepts for clearance by Council.

A concept is an early planning stage in the development of a research initiative (a program announcement, request for applications, or request for proposals). NCCIH staff will present the following concepts for consideration:

  • “Natural Products and Pain”
  • “Mechanisms Underlying Glymphatic and Meningeal Lymphatic System Modulation by Complementary and Integrative Health Approaches”
  • “mHealth and Remotely-Delivered Complementary and Integrative Interventions.”

The NACCIH meets three times per year and is charged with advising, consulting with, and making recommendations to the Center Director on matters relating to NCCIH’s research activities and functions. In closed sessions, it provides secondary review of grant applications with respect to NCCIH research priorities and program balance. There is a dedicated time for public comment during the Open Session.

We welcome you to attend the Open Session in person or via NIH Videocast.
