Division of Extramural Activities

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health

Thinking about a career in science administration? Would you like to work at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and provide scientific leadership and guidance for research involving the microbiome-brain-gut axis?

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is looking for an experienced researcher to join the Division of Extramural Research’s Basic and Mechanistic Research Branch as a program director. The ideal candidate has published peer-reviewed studies on the gut microbiome and/or the gut-brain axis. This is a terrific opportunity to work at one of the largest funding agencies of complementary health research in the world.

What is a program director?

We welcome you to watch this video to learn more about what it’s like to work as a program director (program officer) at NIH:

As a program director, you would have responsibility for providing administrative oversight, technical leadership, and guidance and development of a research portfolio in complementary and integrative health. The focus is on the gut microbiome, the impact of prebiotics and probiotics in modulating gut microbiota to prevent and treat a variety of diseases and disorders, including those that may be associated with the brain-gut axis (e.g., pain and/or anxiety). Complementary health approaches that may affect the gut microbiome (and the brain-gut axis) can include natural products (e.g., probiotics, dietary supplements) and mind and body approaches (e.g., meditation, meditative movement, physical activity).
