NCCIH Hosts Three Informational Webinars for New Clinical Trial Funding Opportunities
April 12, 2017
Across NIH there is a concerted effort to strengthen the clinical trial portfolio, which is recognized as a critically important and high-impact part of the overall NIH portfolio. As part of this effort, NIH has issued a policy about submitting clinical trial applications to NIH via clinical trial specific funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) (NOT-OD-16-147 and NOT-OD-17-043). Dr. Briggs recently wrote a blog post about NCCIH’s new approach to how we will support clinical trials research.
Clinical trials are particularly important to NCCIH due to the high utilization of complementary and integrative approaches by the American public. NCCIH recently released a series of clinical trial specific FOAs. There is one set of FOAs for natural product studies and another set for mind and body intervention studies. These FOAs provide a pathway of funding from early phase trials to intermediate trials and finally multisite clinical efficacy trials for our research community. We will support investigators who conduct clinical trials to establish the building blocks for the foundation of high-impact efficacy or effectiveness clinical trials.
NCCIH is excited about our new set of clinical trial FOAs because they provide a good route to support all the steps in the development of major clinical trials. To assist the research community in understanding how to submit clinical trial applications to NCCIH via our new funding opportunities, we plan to host three informational webinars.
The first webinar will provide an overview of why NCCIH is making changes to the way we accept investigator-initiated clinical trials; how NCCIH plans to support the continuum of clinical research from early pilot studies through multisite efficacy trials; and where investigators can find more information about the FOAs and their requirements. The next two webinars will focus first on mind and body intervention clinical trial FOAs and then natural products clinical trial FOAs. Each webinar will include a question and answer session when participants can email questions to be answered by speakers during the webinar.
