Are you a student or predoctoral or postdoctoral candidate wanting to develop your research career? Are you a principal investigator (PI) on a National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH)-funded award wanting to enhance the diversity of your lab by recruiting and supporting trainees from diverse backgrounds? Are you looking to re-establish your career in research?

NCCIH has a strong commitment to support the development of a diverse and well-trained research workforce and encourages you to apply to one of the following supplemental funding opportunities to 1) enhance the diversity among predoctoral and postdoctoral candidates, NOT-AT-21-013; 2) promote diversity in health-related research, PA-21-071; and 3) support research experiences for individuals with high potential to re-enter or re-integrate into an active research career, NOT-OD-21-134. This blog post describes the unique features of these new supplemental funding opportunities.

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health T32 Supplement Program for Pre- and Postdoctoral Candidates From Diverse Backgrounds (NOT-AT-21-013)

  • NCCIH aims to support developing research careers and enhance diversity and inclusion among T32 trainees. This supplement supports research experiences for predoctoral and postdoctoral students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds as described in the Notice of the National Institutes of Health’s Interest in Diversity: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-20-031.html
  • For PIs of NCCIH-funded T32 training programs, this supplement facilitates the recruitment and training of promising scientists from diverse backgrounds to participate in the research training program.
  • For scholars, this supplement will support research training and can provide an excellent entry point for a research career.
  • Application due dates: Beginning of January and July every year until the expiration date.

Research Supplements To Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Admin Supp - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (PA-21-071)

  • NCCIH aims to enhance the diversity of the research workforce by supporting students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related research, to gain research experience on a funded grant. This supplement is also available to PI(s) of research grants who are or become disabled and need additional support to accommodate their disability in order to continue to work on the research project.
  • For funded PIs, this supplement is an important approach to support diversity in trainees who are interested in research and obtain additional resources for funded research projects.
  • For scholars, this supplement will support your research training and can provide an excellent entry point for a research career.
  • Application due dates: Beginning of January, April, July, and October every year until the expiration date.

Research Supplements To Promote Re-Entry and Re-Integration Into Health-Related Research Careers (Admin Supp - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (NOT-OD-21-134)

  • NCCIH recognizes it is challenging to re-enter research after having a leave of absence or re-integrating from an unsafe or discriminatory environment into a new, safer, and more supportive research environment. This supplement supports full-time or part-time research experiences for individuals with high potential to re-enter or re-integrate into an active research career.
  • For funded PIs, this supplement is an important approach to support the development of research careers and obtain additional resources for funded research projects.
  • For scholars, this supplement will provide a continuation of research training by supporting re-entering or re-integrating into the research workforce.
  • Application due dates: Beginning of January, April, July, and October every year until the expiration date.

We encourage NCCIH grantees to apply to one of these opportunities. Carefully review the supplemental funding opportunity, determine your eligibility, and align your application with the purpose, objective, and scope presented in the supplement.
